What is an aneurysm?

Aneurysm is defined as a balloon-like expansion of blood vessels as a result of weakening of their walls. In aneurysm, the vascular wall is weakened, thinned and there is a risk of rupture. Aneurysm, which can occur in a vein in any part of the body, but most often in the abdominal aorta (the main vessel that originates from the heart and feeds the whole body), can also occur in the area of the aorta originating from the heart and in the aorta in the chest. The major cause of aneurysm formation is arteriosclerosis (atherosclerosis).

What are the risk factors for the disease?

Smoking, Diabetes, Genetic predisposition, High cholesterol levels, High blood pressure, Stress are the most risky factors for disease.

What are the signs and symptoms of the disease?

There may be back pain, abdominal pain and swelling in the abdominal area that feels like a pulsing. In some patients, this ballooned vein may burst and rupture into the abdomen; In this case, fainting, loss of consciousness or even death may occur along with other symptoms.

What is an endovascular stent?

Stents consist of durable woven fabrics strengthened with metal wires and turned into tubes. It is placed in the ballooned vein of the patient through catheters inserted in the groin. The blood now passes through this tubular structure and the ballooned part is disabled.

Who can benefit from this treatment method?

If ballooning is detected in the abdominal or intra-thoracic artery and the size of this ballooning is over 5 cm, patients can be treated with an endovascular stent. Patients with back pain, abdominal pain and swelling in the abdominal region should be examined for aneurysm and diagnosed before complications develop (rupture, death) with the necessary diagnostic methods. Especially male patients over 65 years of age who are smokers should be checked for aneurysm and should be given the necessary treatment. Many people in Turkey live without being aware of this disease. Unfortunately, many patients can only be diagnosed after this ballooned vein is ruptured.
